K17 - AARAKSHAN - Reservation In India - To What Extent ?

On 6 Aug '11
Reservation as a system in India came into being because of some valid reasons. Yes certain castes and tribes were discriminated in past and are still being discriminated in few regions of India. Reservation in education and jobs was introduced to uplift them some 60 yrs ago but has it yielded any desired results? NO. The problem was the manner in which it has been implemented. Here arises many questions:

1. Why a person low to me in ranking and capability get a seat in university & not me?
2. Why should i not get the job wen i am more qualified and better suited?

The initial motto of Dr. Ambedkar was to give financial help to backward class poor students who can perform well and lead a better life, which was a step in the right direction. However, the system we have now is a curse. Everyone understands the need for all sections of the Indian society to get an opportunity to be part of this vibrant economy. But reservation based on caste and community is not an answer to this. Currently in India no institute discriminates any student based on their caste or religion during admission. However many students don’t make it to the institutes because of the economic reasons. Also many students who come from economically weaker sections but do not fall in the reservation criteria do not get a fair opportunity too. Reservation doesn't take into account economic status of person and there lies the problem.

Let me explain this in a simpler way by giving an example of two people. Ram belongs to high caste and Shyam is a low caste person. Both apply for the same job. Shyam gets it as seat he applied was ear marked for reserved category. Now Shyam has a better job and he has stabilized his family to good level economically. Ram gets a low job. Few years later, the son or daughter of Shyam again applies for the job. But wait a minute, isn't his family already "uplifted"? Why should he be eligible for reservation now. Cant that job be given to son of Ram if he is more capable enough as he is the person who needs to be "uplifted" now. There is reservation in every single field including where promotions are concerned. Here performance and personal capabilities take a back seat and people who do not come under the reservation category feel disillusioned and would lose interest in bettering their performances..

What is more irritating to me is instead of reserving seat in universities and in central govt job, why can't govt provide free education & books & materials to deserving candidate and help them to stand up & compete on their own hard work.

"Give food to poor & you feed them once. Give work & you feed them forever"

There are men and women, the two different genders that god made. Rest all differences are made by man. Hence, when these days, we consider women to be equal to men, why demand for reservation. Again when women do not want a reservation, there is no need for others to claim a reservation on grounds of being weaker sections. People should be getting a preference based on their merit.

"Let us not RESERVE if we don't DESERVE"

The recent proposal by HRD minister Arjun Singh to introduce 27.5 per cent reservation for OBC in centrally funded educational institutes, including IITs and IIMs will take India back from where she is today. The educational institutes are the backbone of India’s economy. These institutes have enabled us to reach where we are now. They are centres of excellence in India, primarily because of the quality of students joining them. With the amount of time that a candidate spends in these places, it is impossible to change the fundamental knowledge level of a student. If a candidate has not received proper education and/or, does not have a initial knowledge base to build on, he will find himself completely out of the place. Finally the ultimate aim of a candidate is to find a good job offer after their university education. The reservation may help these candidates in getting admission in the universities, but if the companies are not convinced with the quality, they would rather go empty handed than recruiting them. On the other side, every seat given to less deserving candidate because of the politics of reservation, implies a deserving candidate from the general background is being penalized for being born in a particular caste- something which is out of his control. Not only reserved or general category candidates are losing out but also universities too. As already mentioned the methodology employed by the institutes like, IIMs and IITs, is to build up on the already high knowledge base of the candidates. A compromise on the quality of students would imply a total loss of the component of learning from peers. The knowledge gained through group work/ projects etc. will diminish if people are not at similar level of knowledge base. This will have a major impact on the overall quality of education being imparted by these institutes- both inside and outside the classroom. Also, a major factor in determining the ranking and reputation of these institutes is the placement after the programme. If merit is not the only criteria in admissions, the placement figures are bound to go down having adverse impact on the reputation of these institutes. The Society will be also on losing side. With the Indian economy growing at a fantastic rate, India needs an ever growing supply of competent management and technical grads from the top quality institutes in this country. Compromising on meritocracy means restricting the supply of competent grads for the Indian companies.

Then who is the sole winner? - Yes its Government. The UPA government is well aware of the vote bank of the SC/STs and OBCs. They know that if they want to stay more on politics then they has to make this so called backward & minority class happy.

"Reservation kills Talent & Country, both Socially & Economically"

Another bigger issue I feel is no one is talking about how can we end this menace. Everyone is talking about how can we mess our system more and more. We should have comprehensive survey atleast on the status of SC/STs that have their condition improved in last 60 years or has remained just as it is. There r large number of high caste people who r economically backward then many low caste people. They are not getting any benefit. On another side of the coin, there are lots of people who take advantage from this reservation by claiming that they belongs to backward class & their annual family income is almost nothing and their father was just living off pension money. While they will be having three or four big shops in some of the posh markets and are used to drive exotic cars and had a luxurious lifestyle. I don't know how many such non-salaried people will be there in India, whose annual income will be shown as a paltry sum while they go around in chauffeur driven cars to apply for these jobs in the economically backward category.

The Supreme Court of India on 10 April 2008, upheld the Government's move for initiating 27% OBC quotas in Government funded institutions. The Court has categorically reiterated its prior stand that "Creamy Layer" should be excluded from the ambit of reservation policy. Several criteria to identify creamy layer has been recommended, which are as follows: Those with family income above Rs 250,000 a year should be in creamy layer, and excluded from the reservation quota. Also, children of doctors, engineers, chartered accountants, actors, consultants, media professionals, writers, bureaucrats, defense officers of colonel and equivalent rank or higher, high court and Supreme Court judges, all central and state government Class A and B officials. The court has requested Parliament to exclude MPs’ and MLAs’ children, too.

The Constitution needs to redefined in many ways:
1. Make education mandatory and free for all till the age of 15. If the development of the backward class is the real agenda of govt, i suggest the real need is to tackle the problem from where it originates, right at the primary educational level.
2. Propose reservation based on economic status.
3. Reservation only upto graduation level. Not in post graduation or higher education.
4. Provide opportunity for students to earn while they study.
5. Those who have studied in private sector or urban centres, should by default get converted into general category.
6. Once a father/mother has taken the benefit of reservation, their family should be converted into general category.
7. Instead of issues like reservation, politicians like Arjun Singh & others should divert their energies on decreasing school drop out ratios.

At last, things which matters most - Every child that is deprived of what it rightfully deserves after studying hard is a shame on all the Indian governments & people & every self immolation & suicide incident of a student missing a seat by a few marks represents blood stains in the hands of millions of voters. Please wake up & raise your voice. If Peoples can changes, Boundaries can changes, Vision can changes, Why can't Old Constitution ?

K16 - Put The Glass Down

A chemistry professor decided to teach his students a different lesson one day. Holding a glass of water in his hand, he asked the students, “How much do you think this glass of water weighs?” “500 grams!” came a voice from the back. “600,” said another student. “I don’t really know!” said the professor, holding the glass up to make sure everyone could see it. “And unless we weigh it, we won’t know.”

With the glass still in his outstretched hand, the professor continued, “What will happen if I hold it like this for a few minutes?”

“Nothing!” came the reply. “Right, and if I hold it for an hour like this, what might happen?” “Your hand will begin to hurt,” said a student. “Indeed. And what would happen if I held the glass in my hand like this for 24 hours?”

“You would be in tremendous pain,” said one student. “Your hand will probably go numb,” said another. “Your arm will be paralyzed and we’ll need to rush you to the hospital!” said a student on the last bench.

“True,” said the professor. “But notice that through all this, the weight of the glass did not change. What then causes the pain?”
The class went quiet. The students seemed puzzled.“What should I do to avoid the pain?” asked the professor. “Put the glass down!” said a student.

“Well said!” exclaimed the professor. “And that’s a lesson I want you to remember. The problems and worries in life are like that glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing happens. But think about it a bit longer and they begin to hurt. And if you think about them all day long, you will feel paralyzed – incapable of doing anything. It’s important to remember to let go of your problems. Remember to put the glass down!”

We may not have been in that classroom that day, but it’s a lesson we would all do well to remember. Put the glass down! Always. It’s not just problems and worries. Sometimes, we feel hurt and betrayed by a friend. And we carry that grudge through our lives. It grows and causes us anguish and pain. Learning to forgive – and forget – is not just good for the other people, it’s great for you. Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in jail and when he was finally freed, you can understand how angry and vengeful he must have felt. But guess what? When he became President, he invited his jailers to be present at the inauguration – in the VIP seats! If he could forgive after 27 years of suffering, surely we can too.

It is the same with our fears too. A failure or an incident in early childhood becomes a deeply entrenched fear over time. Fear of public speaking, fear of Maths, fear of rejection. You name it, and chances are, we have it. Someone gave us that glass to hold when we were little kids – ‘you are clumsy, you are no good, you can’t do it’ - and we have faithfully held on to it all our lives. ‘I can’t’ - becomes a thought that stays in our mind and grows – leading us to complete paralysis.

Time to put the glass down!

The story goes that there was a hardworking man who lived a contented life with his wife and children. Every evening when he returned from work, he’d follow a ritual. Outside the door to his house were three nails. On the first one, he’d put his hat. On the second he’d hang his coat. And on the third nail, he’d unwrap an imaginary turban from his head and ‘put’ it there. A friend happened to see this and enquired what he was putting on the third nail every day.

“Those are my problems, my worries and my anger,” said the man. “I have lots of that at work, but when I come home, I remember to take it off – and leave them outside. I don’t take them home with me.” Maybe you should learn to do that too. Starting today.

Put the glass down. And see the difference!

K15 Why India is still a developing nation & will remain developing nation always ?

An Old Story:

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The Grasshopper thinks the Ant is a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.
Come winter, the Ant is warm and well fed. The Grasshopper has no food or shelter so he dies out in the cold.

Indian Version:

The Ant works hard in the withering heat all summer building its house and laying up supplies for the winter.
The Grasshopper thinks the Ant's a fool and laughs & dances & plays the summer away.
Come winter, the shivering Grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the Ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while others are cold and starving.
NDTV, BBC, CNN show up to provide pictures of the shivering Grasshopper next to a video of the Ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food.
The World is stunned by the sharp contrast. How can this be that this poor Grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Arundhati Roy, Medha Patkar & Mamta Bannerji

Arundhati Roy stages a demonstration in front of the Ant's house.
Medha Patkar goes on a fast along with other Grasshoppers demanding that Grasshoppers be relocated to warmer climates during winter .
Mayawati states this as `injustice' done on Minorities.
Amnesty International and Koffi Annan criticize the Indian Government for not upholding the fundamental rights of the Grasshopper.
The Internet is flooded with online petitions seeking support to the Grasshopper (many promising Heaven and Everlasting Peace for prompt support as against the wrath of God for non-compliance) .
Opposition MPs stage a walkout. Left parties call for 'Bengal Bandh' in West Bengal and Kerala demanding a Judicial Enquiry.
CPM in Kerala immediately passes a law preventing Ants from working hard in the heat so as to bring about equality of poverty among Ants and Grasshoppers.
Lalu Prasad allocates one free coach to Grasshoppers on all Indian Railway Trains, aptly named as the 'Grasshopper Rath'.
Finally, the Judicial Committee drafts the ' Prevention of Terrorism Against Grasshoppers Act' [POTAGA], with effect from the beginning of the winter.
Arjun Singh makes 'Special Reservation ' for Grasshoppers in Educational Institutions & in Government Services.
The Ant is fined for failing to comply with POTAGA and having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes,it's home is confiscated by the Government and handed over to the Grasshopper in a ceremony covered by NDTV.
Arundhati Roy calls it ' A Triumph of Justice'.
Lalu calls it 'Socialistic Justice '.
CPM calls it the ' Revolutionary Resurgence of the Downtrodden '
Koffi Annan invites the Grasshopper to address the UN General Assembly.

Many years later...
The Ant has since migrated to the US set up a multi-billion dollar company in Silicon Valley,
100s of Grasshoppers still die of starvation despite reservation somewhere in India,
..AND
As a result of loosing lot of hard working Ants and feeding the grasshoppers,
.
.
.
India is still a developing country !!!

K14.0 Baba Ramdev or Neta Ramdev !!!

PM Manmohansingh & UPA led government, during the last 2 years, has seen more ups-down then they might have seen during their whole career or politics history. CWG scam, 2G scam amidst lots of other small scam and now anti-corruption movement led by Anna Hazare n followed by more flamboyant Baba Ramdev, against the tax evaders. This means PM is a very brave person to face this (in fact such a leader must be compared to coward when he says he is not aware of what is happening; remember the PM comments about 2G scam & Raja)

Let me make it clear at the very beginning, i m not a fan of Baba Ramdev neither i support any political party. This are my personal views & i will keep it straight forward. Baba may be a good yoga teacher, but it is hard for me to believe some of his claims. As far medical field is concerned, i am sure you can't grow back your lost hair simply by rubbing your finger nails against each other, can't cure homosexuality just by breathing deeply, you can't get rid of cancer just by drinking cow urine everyday & you can't cure diabetes by drinking Lauki juice. Baba has been involved in shady land deals before, might have crores of rupees, may be in the name of his trust, charged thousands of rupees for his yoga session which i have seen personally when he visited my town.

Now lets looks at what happened recently behind the scenes. Before Baba started his fast on saturday, he along with his right hand Acharya Balkrushna had a meeting for almost 4 hours with minister Kapil Sibal & Subodhkant Sahai behind closed doors of a five star hotel !!! of Delhi. Govt accepted most of the demand of Baba. The only thing which they didn't accepted was to enforce law to declare this black money as National asset/treasure. Govt after a hard work !! created a heavy dozier of all demands of Baba accepted by them. Baba, for the first time, showed interest to call off his fast. Its looks like an agreement reached between govt & Baba. But Kapil Sibal was not satisfied with this. He wanted Baba to pen down his signature on a written agreement & make announcement their in hotel itself. But Baba believed by announcing this, his follower who came from far away place will get angry (so was this Baba publicity stunt?) so Baba asked for 1 more day and after this (token) fast, he will call it off, and also said, he never sign on any paper (??) So Kapil Sibal & other agreed, took Acharya Balkrushna signature on an agreement on which was written that 99% of Baba's demand has been met by govt n Baba will call his fast off within 24 hours. Kapil, throughout in this meeting, was in contact with finance minister Pranav Mukherjee. He then called PM n informed him about this, & then hugged Baba, saying, Now you can have Celebrations !!

Baba came back to Ramlila & announced on stage that their 99% of demand were met by govt. Next day his fast & yoga camp started. This time he announced he will continue his fast until govt accept his all demands. Kapil Sibal was shocked to hear this. He called Baba & reminded about their agreement of calling off fast after 4 pm but Baba didn't replied in straight manner. Kapil got angered & decided never to call him back. He waited for 5 pm & after getting confirmed of Baba U turn, he went to finance minister Pranav Mukherjee office.

Home minister Chidambaram cancelled his 4 pm flight to Chennai & went to Pranav Mukherjee office. Within 30 mins they decided to took action by sending police troops to Ramlila maidan at midnight. Implementation of this plan was on Chidambaram. At 5:40 pm he met Home secretary G K Pillai & head of Intelligence bureau Nehchal Sandhu. G K Pillai along with Delhi head police officer gave the final call on plan to raid at midnight.

Kapil Sibal prepared to call press conference at 6 pm. When baba came to know about this, he called Kapil, to which he replied, if he will not call off his fast & movement, then he will declare his written agreement. Baba didn't agreed.

On the other side, Delhi police made all preparation to raid Ramlila maidan. At 11 pm, a written notice was sent to baba, stating Govt has given promise to declare black money as nation asset, now u follow your promise; but again baba didn't replied to this notice. At 12:35 am Delhi police started their operation. Baba, resting on stage along with thousands of his followers, suddenly got awake & took microphone in his hand "Even if i get arrested, our fast & movement against corruption will continue" when one policeman went near to arrest him, he jumped off from stage & ran. Followers gathered around baba & gave him cordless microphone. He requested people to remain calm & peaceful. Police had to watch this drama going on. Now tear gas was thrown, some of which caught fire on stage, chaos was created among people. Old men, women & children started running, many of them got injured, but baba disappeared. He disguised himself in white color woman cloth. 2 hours went but police didn't found baba. There were different groups of women chanting against this raid, but one group was silent, behaving like being injured & was trying to flea away. Police got doubted & they found baba among those women. (Now why the hell, baba jumped from the stage, ran like a thief/accused, changed his orange clothes to white colored woman cloth? What baba wanted to do? He could better got arrested, which would have increased sympathy toward him from people not only present there in Ramlila but from the whole country. But was he afraid? How can he be trusted? Just recently, after few days of this incidents, due to fast his body started deteriorating, to which doctors advised him to stop fast & take food. But he denied & decided to go on fasting until his death !! Now the person who ran n disguised in woman cloth is worthy of being trusted? Its better looks like a well executed drama)

Was this well planned action of Govt.?

If central govt has taken such strict action against baba movement from the very beginning itself, than this sunday midnight raid would have been considered as legal action against baba. But for many days govt minister spread red carpet for baba, & agreed to take action against corruption & then raided. This shows it was well planned action by govt.

Govt knew that from 2nd day itself, RSS workers from whole country will come to Ramlila & will took over this movement & hence they decided to raid at midnight. As planned earlier, Govt & Congress party kept themself at distance with congress giving opposite statement to that of govt. Congress newspaper's editor Anil Shastri tweeted next day, "what happened at Ramlila maidan was unfortunate & was avoidable. This decision was of PM Manmohansingh govt n has nothing to do with congress party"

And than the blame game started between different people & party. Some minister accused baba as purely businessman to which other replied, "that's your minister went to receive baba at airport & sign MOU." The opposition, mainly Sangh parivar came out in full throated support of Ramdev, comparing police raid on yoga camp with Jallianwala Bagh massacre, an allegation that insults the memories of victims of Amritsar atrocity. This comparison was simply ridiculous. As TV footage showed, there was no violence from police as they claimed. But yes, followers of Baba were definately violent, to which police responded. If people present there has to blame anyone for this midnight raid, than its none other than their Baba who kept them behind in dark scenes. I don't know what Baba motives are? Bringing back black money n anti corruption action are only his agenda, but he too has secret wish to enter political frame & he can't find better stage than this. (remember last year he announced he will form his own political party led by his own people)

Baba was arrested & sent back to Varanasi. He was prohibited to enter Delhi for at least 15 more days to calm down situation. Although he tried to go back to Delhi but was denied by UP govt. Next day baba announced, he personally has forgiven PM & govt, but this nation & people will never forgive this action against their democracy. Next day baba did U turn (just like he do sirsharshan) & said, he will form an army of 11k people, from different part of country, will give them arms & training & then will face govt force. (now after thief, accused, lady, & businessman tag, baba was not satisfied so he went for terrorist tag too!! Was this Gandhian non peaceful movement or was it greed of baba?)

On other side, UPA is dreading a confrontation with Baba for a simple reason- he is followed by people who don't thinks on their own, they will do anything for him, will fast & will also die if circumstances arises, they are like misguided terrorist, who thinks they will go to heaven directly from Ramlila. This country has came to such a stage that ignorance is practiced on an industrial scale can be seen as an alternate to its political system discredited by corruption. Tihar jail is already flooded with more politicians than murderers.

Cornered by a number of corruption cases, the Congress led govt. has not done anything to give an impression that it's serious about tackling corruption. It's not serious about nothing, only power. But so are other party too. Now where people of largest democratic country goes? To Baba Ramdev or Neta Ramdev !!

K12.0 How to Drink More Water Every Day

Steps

1. Determine how much water you need. You've probably heard the "8 by 8" rule - drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day (2 quarts, 1.8 liters) - but the amount of water a person needs varies depending on his or her weight and activity level. Another way to determine your specific recommended water intake is to divide your weight (in pounds) by two. The resulting number is the number of ounces of water you need each day.
For example, if you weigh 150 lbs., strive to drink 75 ounces of water daily.
For those who use the Metric system, divide your weight (in kilograms) by 30 (ex. somebody weighing 70 kg is going to need 2.3 liters per day). Keep in mind that these recommended intake numbers are controversial and some experts believe they are a gross exaggeration.

2. Measure your daily intake of water. Do this for a few days. If you find that you're drinking less than the recommended quantity, try some of the following tips:

3. Carry water with you everywhere you go in a bottle or other container. Note here that recent research continuously shows plastic bottles leach toxic chemicals into water. It is highly recommended that one use glass containers such as an old Pierre bottle. Begin keeping all your glass bottles, and soon you'll find the ideal glass bottle for you. Remember, water will never become toxic in glass containers! Before long, you'll find yourself reaching for it without a second thought.

4. Keep a glass or cup of water next to you whenever you'll be sitting down for a long time, such as when you're at your desk at work. Drink from it regularly as you're working.

5. Try wearing a digital watch that beeps at the beginning of each hour. Use that as a reminder to pour yourself a glass of water. Vow to drink that water before the next beep. If you drink only one small (6 ounce or 180 ml) cup per hour, you'll have consumed 48 ounces (1.4 liters) by the end of an 8-hour workday.

6. Get a water purification system.. Purified water tastes very good and may help make drinking water more appealing to you. Be aware, though, that as you grow accustomed to purified water, you may find that tap water leaves a bad taste in your mouth, even though it may be better for your teeth. Keep in mind that fluoride, found in small quantities in tap water, is necessary for strong, healthy teeth.

7. Add lemons or limes to your water. This makes it taste better and makes you want to drink more of it. Be careful not to make it too sour, just a splash of sourness should do the trick. Cucumber slices can also be added to a glass of water.. Some mint leaves can be added to a pitcher of water which should be allowed to sit overnight. These are cheap alternatives to the bottled flavored water.

8. Eat water rich foods, such as fruits like watermelon, which is 92% water by weight. Blend up some seedless fresh watermelon flesh with some ice and place a few sprigs of mint (optional) - one of the most refreshing drinks, especially for the summertime. Cranberry juice is also another option, and has a bitter taste. Patients suffering from urinary infection caused by insufficient intake of water should drink cranberry juice and eat watermelon if not plain water everyday. A tomato is 95% water. An egg is about 74% water. An uncooked piece of lean meat is about 70% water..

9. Keep water cold if it tastes better for you. Keep a pitcher of water in the refrigerator at home. Add ice or freeze water in a sports bottle before taking it with you, it will eventually melt and stay cold. However, too cold water will cost your body energy to heat it to body temperature.

10. Climate can drastically change how much water you need. On hot days that require you to be outside, you should drink more water to counteract the fluids you lose when you sweat. This not only keeps your body hydrated, it can prevent heat-related illness.
